FAQ
Does your soap have lye in it?
The final product doesn't have lye in it. Soap can’t be created without the use of sodium hydroxide (lye) for hard bars of soap and potassium hydroxide (lye) for liquid soap. No lye will remain after the saponification (chemical process of turning fat and lye into soap) process is completed.
How long does a bar of soap last?
This is a two part question (shelf life and while in use).
- The shelf life of a bar of soap should be 1 year or more in accordance with the ingredients used and how it is stored (out of the heat, humidity, open to the air and sunlight). The scent will diminish overtime but the quality of performance will increase.
-The size, ingredients used, hardness (the amount of moisture in bar of soap) and how soap is stored after use determines how long the soap will last. Soap shouldn't be stored in a wet soap dish and should be dried between use.
Why doesn't handcrafted soap lather like commercial brands?
Many factors come in to play for lather; many soaps don’t lather as well by design, due to percentage of oils used, rather concentrating on the mildness of the soap. Lather doesn’t equate performance for soap and less moisture contained in a bar of soap increases lather also. A good bar of soap will balance hardness (durability), lather (fluffy/stability) and moisturizing capability.
How are Indigo Island Candle soaps made?
We use the cold-process method (mixture of oil, lye and glycerin without added additional heat). Once bars are formed and cut, they are cured for approximately 4-6 weeks to allow the bar to fully neutralize and reduce water to increase harness and long lasting bars of soap. We also super-fat (added excess oils) the formulas for increased moisturizing.
Are the soaps organic?
Our soaps are made using many organic ingredients and each product label will indicate which ingredients are organic. Soap is not created in nature, so it’s technically not organic or natural, but the process to create soap uses many organic and natural ingredients.
Do you sell soap for sensitive skin?
We have produced scented, unscented or light scented soaps for those who have sensitive skin or allergies, but this is no guarantee a person wouldn’t have a reaction. If reaction occurs, discontinue use and consult a physician.
